Back Pain can be multi-factorial
31 years old, Miss K came to us for her Severe Back Pain Issue. Back in 2010, she had faced an accident at home and injured her back which caused her disc to herniate. She had severe back and Sciatica pain, was bed-ridden and could barely move at that time. After being given Steroids and many more medications for several weeks, she realised that her health was deteriorating and there was no improvement in the back pain also. She had to leave her job as she could not sit for work. So, she decided to try Ayurvedic Treatment. After a year of this treatment from a Physical Centre, she could see a lot of improvement. But after a point when there was no further improvement, her Ayurvedic Doctor told her to start Yoga Therapy. Not knowing about Yoga Therapy, she consulted with Yoga Classes who rightfully directed her to search for a Yoga Therapist and take personalised Treatment. This is how Miss K. got in touch with Guna Therapy.
During the consultation, we saw that her condition was too sensitive. She cried in pain while slightly raising her leg. After the complete consultation, we found that she had been following Modern Diet Plans, where Sprouted and other Vata-aggravating food items were a part of her Meals. She could not manage a good lifestyle due to her condition as well as her habits. A lot of things needed to be corrected.
Within a month into the Program, she could observe mild improvements with respect to her daily activities. She could stand and cook for longer durations. She started to wake up early, go for a walk and come back home without pain. There was drastic improvement in her Physical Health. But since she was learning Yoga, we also touched upon the topics of Mind and Emotions as and when we found time after the sessions. Withing 3 months, there were major improvements seen. But still there were instances when she would suddenly get a spike of pain, though rarely.
Then, one day while talking after a session, Miss K. opened up and said that she had been seeing a psychologist from a while as she had been struggling with the condition of Hypervigilance since her childhood. Her sleep was disturbed and she would often feel low on energy during daytime. She told about her childhood trauma that had led to all of this. She shared all of this because she had an intensely emotionally relieving experience the previous day.
Her Verbatim, “After I finished my Asana practice, I just lied down in Savasana and started to Practice Deep Relaxation technique as we usually do after our sessions. As I went deeper into it, I felt highly emotional and started to cry. I did not stop my tears this time and continued to cry. I don’t know how, but this relieved so much of baggage and I started to feel so much lighter. I can’t explain how relieving it was.”
It was then explained to her how Asana Practice followed by Savasana brings the entire mind-body complex to a state of deep relaxation, allowing the hidden emotions to surface and when these are allowed to be expressed in this safe environment, there a deep sense of relief.
On another day she shared, “Today I was feeling very low and anxious. I stayed in bed most of the day. In the evening, I remembered this conversation (yoga to relieve stress, anxiety) we had in one of our sessions, so I kinda pushed myself to get out of bed to practice. I practiced for 40 mins and I do feel a lot better now. Thank you Sweta! ❤”
What seems a purely Physical condition, had so much depth to it. Our Mind and Body are not separate entities. Mental Burden percolates to the Physical Body weakening one or the other parts and when the conditions are slightly challenging, we start seeing deterioration in Physical and Physiological Health. Miss K. has now been practising on her own. She joins us whenever she needs an extra push
